EU Law and Policy
Many laws and regulations that are
implemented across the European Union originate in Brussels.
Our European lawyers and professionals have expertise in advising
clients on the application of the EU regulatory frameworks across a
range of industry sectors, and challenging decisions made in
Brussels or in member states on the basis that they infringe
European law. We have also advised the European Commission on
these issues.
Our lawyers and professionals have
in-depth experience with pharmaceuticals and life
sciences, energy and natural resources, procurement, environment, intellectual property,
product safety, betting and
gaming, waste,
agriculture, food and fisheries, and telecommunications. We
advise on issues directly related to the fundamental
principles of EU Law (free movement of goods, workers, capital,
freedom of establishment and the freedom to provide
services).
Our regulatory practice includes
advising on compliance, the application of competition law, a wide
range of dealings with the national and European authorities, and
representing claimants and defendants in proceedings before
national courts and the European courts.
We have excellent relationships with
the European Commission and other community institutions and
regularly assist clients on policy issues, as well as lobbying
government bodies in connection with proposals for changes to
existing regulatory regimes or development of new laws and
rules.
Our experience also extends to advising on the national
interpretation of EU law in member states' national courts. We
recently successfully represented a client in a case that was
appealed to the UK's Supreme Court relating to the interpretation
of the Aarhus Convention (relating to environmental issues) and the
EU directives implementing that convention.
