Transport Authorities
The global market in transportation remains a
dynamic environment, with transportation authorities exploring new
strategies for revitalization and maintenance of key
infrastructure.
New investment to accommodate growth in
demand, expanding transport infrastructure for passengers and
freight, and a host of other projects are underway
globally. Authorities must choose from a wide array of
different options which are available to satisfy this transport
development and demand – roads (toll and non-toll), light and heavy
rail, conventional and high speed railways, metros, bus services,
taxis and air travel. Each have their own advantages and
disadvantages to be considered and risk assessed. Added to this,
transport authorities also have to ensure that their transport
development is sustainable, bearing in mind the potential impacts
on the environment.
This potentially massive investment in
transport is required at the same time as many transport
authorities are constrained in their spending – either because of
budget cuts or availability of private finance. Transport
authorities therefore need to take difficult decisions about the
methods available to them to procure the transport that they
need.
